Noticing Nature 18/100 – Here we go round
Working toward 100 posts of 100 words each about nature in our own backyards
“Here we go round the mulberry bush . . . “
You recall the song, don’t you? We sang it as youngsters, even if we weren’t sure what it was about. (Apparently, the song may have dark origins - something to do with Victorian female inmates exercising in a prison yard!)
Well, today I finally discovered what a mulberry bush looks like. Turns out, they aren’t bushes at all but are tall roadside trees laden with small fruits resembling blackberries that drop and create a sticky mess on the sidewalk.
Likely why we’re advised to go “round” the bush, right?!!
But they LOOK pretty!
Interesting history!
